Member Spotlight: Meet Jess
Welcome to the very first edition of our Member Spotlight Series, where we shine a light on the incredible people who make The Upper Room more than just a coworking space—it’s a community.
To kick things off, we couldn’t think of a better person to feature than Jess, a familiar face to everyone who has walked through our doors. As a full-time member for the past three years, she holds the title of our Manager —keeping things running smoothly, and making sure The Upper Room feels like home for everyone.
Jess has seen it all—the early morning coffee-fuelled work sprints, the spontaneous brainstorming sessions, and, of course, the occasional “let’s just call it networking” happy hour. She’s built her business, found her rhythm, and become an integral part of the space.
So, who is Jess beyond her computer and coffee mug? Let’s dive in and get to know her better!
What's your name, and what's your superpower (a.k.a. job)?
I’m Jess, the creative force behind Sunstone Studio. I'm a designer by day, art dabbler by night (okay, whenever I get a spare moment—which is rare). My superpower? I juggle design projects with the ease of a circus performer, managing everything from branding to website creation. On top of that, I help manage this amazing space. It's a creative haven where the ideas flow as freely as the coffee. Lucky? Very!
If your personality were a cocktail (or coffee), what would it be?
If I were a coffee, I’d definitely be an iced latte. Why? Because I'm that friend who brings the energy and the chill vibes.
If you had to wear one outfit forever, what would it be?
Easy! An oversized tee with gym shorts. I mean, I'm not exactly hitting the gym, but comfort is key. Add a pair of long ankle socks and joggers (because, well, #mumlife), and you’ve got the look I’m rocking 99% of the time. Honestly, anything oversized and comfortable is my go-to—who needs tight clothes when you can feel like you're living in a blanket all day?
What inspired you to pursue your current career path?
I always knew I was meant for the creative field. But the choice between fine arts and visual design? That was the real dilemma. Fine arts was tempting, but visual design won me over. The idea of taking art and transforming it into something functional that could make people’s lives better? Absolutely! I still love creating art, but designing for a living? That’s what I’m all about.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received, and why does it resonate with you?
The best advice I’ve ever gotten? “Work hard and be kind, and amazing things will happen.” Sounds simple - but let me tell you, it’s one of those nuggets of wisdom that actually works. I’ve lived by that motto, and I’ve seen amazing things come from it—be it clients, collaborations, or just moments of pure creative flow. Being kind has a ripple effect, and working hard? Well, that’s the magic sauce.
Can you share one book, podcast, or resource that has significantly shaped your professional outlook?
The Artist's Way. It’s the kind of book that doesn’t just make you reflect on your work, but on your whole life. It helps you tap into your inner creativity, whether you're a designer or a painter, and it encourages you to recognise what's going on beneath the surface—both positive and negative. It’s like having a personal growth coach for your creative spirit. Plus, it reminds you that your creative flow is a living thing—nurture it, and it’ll grow. If you haven’t read it, put it on your list.
In your experience, what’s the secret to staying motivated during challenging workdays?
First off, coffee is non-negotiable. But beyond that, my secret weapon is the beach just across the road from my office. There’s something about a quick swim or walk along the water that totally resets my brain. If all else fails, I’m not ashamed to say I’m a huge fan of a good old-fashioned power nap. With a 9-month-old at home, the days of uninterrupted sleep are behind me—so a quick 15-minute nap can make a world of difference.
What does success look like to you in both your career and your personal life?
Success, for me, is less about awards or achievements and more about the simpler things—good health, the support of loved ones, and a circle of inspiring people. If I’m surrounded by creative, positive energy and have the freedom to do work I love, that’s my version of success. On the personal side, it’s about balance—spending time with family and friends, nurturing relationships, and finding joy in the small, everyday moments. It’s not about the destination, it’s the journey (cliché, but true!).
What aspect of being part of The Upper Room community has had the biggest impact on you?
The Upper Room is my creative sanctuary. It’s been my home away from home for nearly three years. The space itself is beautiful, but what really sets it apart are the incredible people I get to share it with. Whether it’s brainstorming with fellow creatives or just being inspired by the energy in the room, I can honestly say I leave the space feeling more energized and more creative than when I walked in. I feel lucky to be a part of such a tight-knit, dynamic community.
When you need a quick pick-me-up, what’s your go-to comfort food or guilty pleasure?
Ah, the million-dollar question. It’s gotta be the belguim chocolate waffle from barefoot cafe . I mean, if there’s chocolate involved, you know I’m there. I’m also a sucker for Roller’s cinnamon scrolls. Honestly, I’m not above having one as a snack at any point of the day.
